Interested In Becoming An ICU Nurse

Jefferey Hammond, MSN, BSN, NEA-BC, CCRN
Patient Care Director
New York

I am a Med-Surg Nurse. If I am interested in becoming an ICU nurse so that I can later become a Nurse Anesthetist, do you recommend that I read any books before hand to make me a critical thinker before applying for an ICU job?

Answer:
I don’t think one can develop critical thinking skills just by reading books. Critical thinking is developed by asking questions about your environment. Ask great questions when faced with a problem and you will develop strong critical thinking skills. Working in the ICU will help you develop critical thinking skills provided you ask great questions.
