The 2010 DiversityNursing.com $5,000 Education Award to Lindsey Harris
We are honored and delighted to bestow The 2010 DiversityNursing.com $5,000 Education Award to Lindsey Harris of Birmingham, Alabama. Lindsey heard about the Award through the NBNA (National Black Nurses Association) where she has been a member since 2003, and is the Secretary of her local chapter. She said recently in an interview with DiversityNursing.com that, “the Award relieves a lot of stress as I’ll be able to focus more on my studies and not worry as much about what it costs.”
Lindsey is currently an RN at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital on the Benign Gynecology/Gynecology-Oncology unit. She has worked there for over 3 years and is currently pursuing her Master’s in Nursing with a Family Nurse Practitioner focus. Lindsey went on to say that she “loves school and as a hands-on learner, the clinical rotations are where I apply what I learned in the classroom. It’s the reality of the work and meeting people from different walks of life where I learn the most.”
Lindsey was drawn to Nursing because she loves helping people and found that it is one of the best fields where she can “be fulfilled.” Lindsey said “I always get something out of it when I help someone. I feel like that’s my reward.” Lindsey’s passion is women and children. She loves children and says she connects well with them. Children naturally gravitate toward her — there is a special bond. She relates to women because she knows how they feel.
She is also very dedicated to the community. Lindsey volunteers at least once a week at M-Power Ministries, a free clinic that welcomes everyone. Lindsey stated “the people I care for are so thankful and helping them gives me a strong sense of purpose”. She also participates in health fairs, walks for cures and is a Big Sister within the Greater Birmingham Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. Lindsey was recently recognized with one of the most prestigious awards obtained in Nursing at UAB entitled, Clinical Excellence. She was also recognized by her alma mater, Samford University, with the Courage to Care award.
Lindsey’s goal is to work closely with the community to provide health care and education as a Nurse Practitioner for the less fortunate population. Lindsey plans to use the DiversityNursing.com $5000 Education Award toward her Master’s degree in Nursing/Family Nurse Practitioner.
Congratulations Lindsey — we wish you All The Best!!!
