What works best for you to understand a particular patient’s culture?

It seems that assumptions are made about a patient based upon how they dress, their native language, diet, etc. When assumptions are made, it can interfere with your patient’s overall care and health. As a Nurse, what works for you to understand your patient’s real needs?

In my place of employment, we incorporate the Kleiman;s cultural questionnaire into our nursing admission assessment. This way we have documented what the patient’s cultural practices (not just ethnicity) are, so that we can better understand the patient’s needs and tailor our care plans to meet them.

Asking works best if possible when that can’t be done asking family members or reading about other cultures or videos, there are lots of ways… i’ve been interested as i’ve worked with multi cultural staff in nursing, we don’t have to agree but its good to be aware and be sensitive to differences, respect is ultimate.

    Nora,

Would you be willing to share the Kleiman’s cultural questionnaire with us on this blog?

    Thanks
